FROM NEWS LINE 2000

So much happened that is difficult to think back over the last 4 years to when Martha House was just breezeblocks and had no roof.

I have lived at Martha House for the last two years. I have a great team of carers - Helen, Anita, Tracey, Nicky and IIdi - and I make sure that they do their job properly and don't sit down too much. I can't see, so they help me walk and push me in my chair.
I have my own bedroom with lots of posters on the wall of footballers and pop stars. I also have my own TV, video and CD player. I like to rest in my bedroom listening to music and watching my favourite videos.
My carers keep me on my toes by taking me out most days. I go the gym each week because I like to keep very fit. I also go to the pub with some other residents for lunch and we meet some really nice people. Martha House has two minibuses, so we are able to go further afield. I am a great supporter of Nottingham Forest Football Club and I love going to watch them play, cheering them on a supporting them.
At Martha House we have our own therapy centre, which is where I go swimming, have aromatherapy, music therapy and use the sensory rooms, which I enjoy very much.
We also have a sensory garden with raised flowerbeds, which I help water in the summer. There are uneven surfaces to go over and obstacles to go through.
Since being at Martha House, I have also been on holiday with Helen, last Easter to Lourdes in France. We went with Handicapped Children's Pilgrim Trust (HCPT), which was great fun and I made sure the Helen worked very hard.
I have a great life at Martha House with all my friends doing all the things I like to do.

Milestones were, I guess; getting the building works finished; staff; passing registration; squeezing residents from Local Authorities; the first minibus; the garden; setting up the charity shop, the music room; multi-sensory equipment; the first holiday; developing the therapy centre activities unit; running out of space...

We have always been a dynamic charity and we now have a first-class family home; a source of contentment, support and friendship to stressed parents; a therapy centre for the disabled community and a busy shop.

We are also a significant employer, with over 80 staff.

MY DAD

I would like him
to come today
and walk
the dog.
My dad is
funny
and lovely
and lovely
and I would like
to walk with him
again.
I wonder
what my dad is doing
today.
Perhaps
he walks the dog
all day long
without me?
Perhaps
he will visit today
my Dad and my Mum?
But I don't know
what they are doing
today.
But I will ring up
and find out.

CELANDINES

A hundred
little suns
yellow and shining
yellow and shining.
Celandines,
a hundred little suns
waving gently
in the gentle breeze.

SPRING

Walk on Monday
sunny
but cold
birds sing
I smell flowers
and I laugh.

Peter Leach Director of Nursing -

I am very thankful to work as the Nursing Director at Martha House, it is a privilege. Martha Trust has offered me the opportunity to provide truly individual care to profoundly disabled people in a purpose-built home.

I will never forget the moment when our first patient moved in to live here. It was an emotional time, for Matthew, his family and the staff. Everyone had such high expectations which, I believe, we have met.

The uniqueness of Martha House is not just about the purpose-built home, the high staffing levels, the partnership with the parents, the involvement with the local community or detailed care plans. For me the uniqueness of Martha House is the sense of home, love and caring, which our patients and their families experience.
In the near future, we will be offering a wider range of day care services for people with learning disabilities.
We've only just started!
